Intermittent Catheter Education

Intermittent catheter types

  • Straight Tip Catheters: These are the common type of intermittent catheter and are designed for both male and female use.  The catheters come in a sterile package and are for single use only.  They are not to be resterilized.  They come in many different sizes from about 8fr to 30fr depending on what size you doctor feels is right for you.  They also come in different lengths for male and female.  The male catheters are about 16” in length and the female catheters are about 6” in length.  They are made from many different materials depending on the individuals needs.  Most intermittent catheters are made of rubber, silicone or Teflon.
  • Coude Tip Catheters: These catheters are used by men.  They have a curved end which allows for easier insertion when certain conditions apply (your doctor will know if this is the right catheter for you).   The catheters come in a sterile package and are for single use only.  They are not to be resterilized. They come in the same sizes as the straight male catheters do and can be made of varies materials.
  • Closed System Catheters: These catheters are mostly used by patients that have a high risk for Urinary Track Infections (UTI’S).  These catheters come with a pre-lubricated catheter tip with integrated collection bag.  Most kits include, a BZK wipe, povidone-iodine swab stick, gloves, a sterile wipe and an under pad.
  • Hydrophilic Catheters: These catheters have a coating that when added to water forms a jelly-like substance, which makes insertion easier for some people.  Hydrophilic catheters can also come pre-packaged with the water already added.  In this case the catheter dose not need to be inserted in water before cathing.  The catheters come in a sterile package and are for single use only.  They are not to be resterilized.
