Straight Catheters

Straight catheters are a common type of intermittent catheter used for intermittent self-catheterization. Self-catheterization is a procedure in which the patient periodically inserts a catheter through the urethra into the bladder to empty it of urine. These catheters come in a sterile package and are for single use only. They are not to be re-sterilized. They are made from many different materials depending on the individual’s needs. Most intermittent catheters are made of rubber, silicone or Teflon.

How Does a Straight Catheter Work?

Straight catheters are inserted through the urethra and guided into the bladder. This will cause urine to flow through little openings called eyelets and exit through the catheter tube into the bag. Once you have emptied your bladder, you can remove the catheter and throw it away.

Who Uses a Straight Tip Catheter?

Intermittent catheters are used to help manage urinary retention and large residual urine volumes, often due to neurogenic bladders in both male and female patients. Urinary retention is a condition in which the bladder is unable to empty on its own. The use of a straight tip intermittent catheter is a simple way to solve this problem. You may require the use of a straight tip catheter if you have:

  • Nerve damage
  • An issue with the urinary tract
  • A condition that weakens bladder muscles

What Sizes Do They Come In?

Straight tip intermittent catheters range in size from an 8 Fr to 18 Fr. The smallest size starts at an 8 French and the largest size goes up to 18 French. Your doctor will decide which size is right for you.

Coude Tip Catheters

A coude tip catheter is a special type of catheter that has a curved tip on it. The curved tip on this catheter allows it to move around obstructions for successful catheterization. Oftentimes, a regular straight tip catheter cannot get into the bladder of male patients, but a coude tip allows for easier insertion into the bladder to drain the urine. These come in a sterile package and are for single use only. Coude tip catheters are available in various sizes and materials to suit individuals’ needs.

How Does a Coude Tip Catheter Work?

Once inserted through the urethra and into the bladder, the coude tip catheter has eyelets or holes on the tip of it that the urine flows through. This type of catheter doesn’t need to attach to a leg or drainage bag and is easily able to be drained into a toilet or bedpan. This catheter is a disposable, single-use catheter that is inserted by using lubricating jelly that is applied to the tip of the catheter. In order to prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs), a new catheter should be used each time catheterizing needs to be done.

What Sizes Do They Come In?

Coude tip catheters range in size from an 8 Fr to 18 Fr. The smallest size starts at an 8 French and the largest size goes up to 18 French. Your doctor will decide which size is right for you.

Who Uses a Coude Tip Catheter?

Coude tip catheters are usually prescribed to those who have difficulty inserting a straight catheter into the urethra and through to the bladder. While coude tip catheters can be prescribed to female patients, they’re usually used by male patients who have a urethral blockage or obstruction. This can be caused by a number of things, including:

  • Blockage
  • An enlarged prostate
  • Swelling from recent surgery
  • Other conditions that narrow the urethra

Sterile Technique Catheters

These closed system catheter kits are sterile and designed for one-time use. The catheter is connected to a 1500 ml collection bag. The catheter is pre-lubricated and has polished eyelets for a more comfortable experience. This type of catheter is a good choice if you suffer from urinary tract infections (UTIs). They come in different materials, but most intermittent catheters are made of rubber, silicone or Teflon. Please consult with your doctor to make sure this is the right system for you.

How Does a Sterile Technique Catheter Work?

This pre-lubricated intermittent catheter is contained inside of a collection bag and is sometimes called a “touchless” catheter as your fingers will never have to directly touch the catheter tube. When inserting, you will advance the catheter out of the bag and into the urethra until it reaches the bladder. After being placed, the catheter will allow the urine to drain into the attached collection bag. This bag allows you to measure output and monitor your hydration levels. Also, if a toilet is not available, it allows you to self-catheterize in privacy.

For more detailed information regarding catheterization, please call us at 1-888-466-4217 and our trained specialists will walk you through the process.

Who Uses a Sterile Technique Catheter?

Closed system catheters can be used by both men and women. Many times, this type of catheter system is used for a period of time following certain types of surgery. In addition, this type of catheter system is used to help prevent UTIs in many people. People who are allergic to latex can get this catheter made of several different types of materials, including silicone and Teflon.
